Mackay to Proserpine

Tackle World Mackay Fishing Report – March 2018
Another month has just cruised on pass and with plenty of rain
and wind has had anglers biting at the bit for good weather.
Fingers crossed Mother nature will give us a calm sunny Easter
weekend so we can get out and wet a line.

With plenty of Rainy days has seen an influx of prawns and mud
crabs in all of the creek systems, the larger tides around the full
and new moon saw crabbers working the flats at the mouths and
bagging out in one tide. Prawners getting their 10lt bucket in a
few hours and some of the best quality prawns seen in years.
The Seaforth area in particular has been producing good hauls of
Crabs and Prawns and live baiters doing well on Barramundi,
Fingermarkand Grunter with some solid fish caught close to the
boat ramp.

Land based lure enthusiasts working small hard body lures and
plastics in Bakers, Sandy and Alligator Creeks have been
rewarded with mixed catches of Flathead, Barra and Blue Salmon
whilst small poppers and stick baits worked in the shallows
producing good numbers of large Whiting.

The ever-reliable Pioneer River has been a hotspot over the pass
month with live baiters snaring Barra, Finger Mark and
Mangrove Jack. All the bridges throughout the river have been fishing
extremely well with the Forgan Smith Bridge seeing its
fair share of anglers. The rock bars on upper reaches of the Ron

Camm Bridge around low tide have seen lure fanatics tied up to
large Barra and Mangrove Jacks whilst the Red beacon at the
mouth has been plagued with schools of Queenfish and the odd
large G.T. smashing poppers.
The Proserpine River around the neap tides fired with live baits
and lures. Trolling 3-5 metre hard body’s along Flying Fox,
McPhersons and the Eagles nest saw anglers bagging King
Salmon, Barra and Blue Salmon.

Whilst baiters fishing the Mussel beds using strip baits snagged Grunter, Jew and Bream. Crabs were in large numbers throughout the river with most boats getting their bag limit.
